Police boss put on the spot over nicknames

What you need to know:

  • He told the commission, chaired by Mr Johnstone Kavuludi, that he was aware and proud of the first nickname but denied knowledge of the second one.
  • Asked why he did not list some of his accounts, especially one in which proceeds from his tea farm were being banked, Mr Githinji said he forgot because it was a joint account with his wife.

A former director of the Administration Police Training College was Thursday put on the spot over his aliases, allegedly derived from his character at the institution.

Senior Superintendent of Police Peter Ndegwa Githinji could not explain to the National Police Service Commission vetting team sitting in Nakuru why he omitted details of some of his bank accounts.

Mr Githinji, whose aliases are Githinji Mwenyewe and Nusu Mkate, denied claims that he attained the names due to corrupt deals during his 21-year stint at the police training college.

He told the commission, chaired by Mr Johnstone Kavuludi, that he was aware and proud of the first nickname but denied knowledge of the second one.

“I am the one who came up with the first nickname. I know people did not like me because of my strictness and opposition to corruption,” said Mr Githinji in his response to a question by lawyer David Mong’eri, who was representing the Law Society of Kenya on the panel.

He denied claims that he acquired the “Nusu Mkate” name due to corruption and demands for bribery from students and guardians.

JOINT ACCOUNT

Asked why he did not list some of his accounts, especially one in which proceeds from his tea farm were being banked, Mr Githinji said he forgot because it was a joint account with his wife.

The panel wondered why he could forget an account with Sh15,000 monthly banking and another with close to Sh350,000 annual bonuses yet he remembered to list his Harambe Sacco dividends of Sh12,000.

He could not explain why he opened a personal account for his matatu business.
