  • “These men were out to kill Kenyans. They were dangerous criminals on the loose. I am glad we were able to save lives,” Mr Marwa said.

Police Friday evening gunned down two suspected terrorists at the Likoni bus terminus.
After being cornered in the 5.50 pm incident, one of the suspects attempted to escape but security officers, who had been trailing them since Thursday, were on alert.

“Our agents entered the matatu that the suspects were travelling in after receiving a report".

“I am glad that we were able to stop them before they accomplished their deadly mission,” Mombasa County Commander Robert Kitur said.
A county askari who mans the terminus told the Saturday Nation that one of the men tried to shoot an officer.

During a scuffle that ensued inside the matatu, one suspect jumped out but was caught by a security agent.

Tried to kill himself

“As the officer struggled to pin him down, the suspect took out a hand grenade and tried to kill himself, but he was shot,” Mr Kitur said.

The incident drew a huge crowd of curious onlookers while hawkers who operate besides the terminus hurriedly closed down their businesses and scampered for safety.

Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa said that two were part of a gang that has been terrorising people in the county.

“Officers got a tip from the public. Let criminals know that their days are numbered,” he said.

The suspects, according to county commander, used to operate between Kisauni, Likoni and Ukunda.

“These men were out to kill Kenyans. They were dangerous criminals on the loose. I am glad we were able to save lives,” Mr Marwa said.

“Those who are still hiding should know that we will smoke them out,” he said.

Mr Marwa appealed to the public not to withhold information on suspected criminals so that police can ensure security for all.
