Three suspected criminals shot dead in night shootout near Mathari Hospital

Three suspected criminals were shot dead by police in a shootout near Mathari Mental Hospital Thursday night.

Police recovered a mini Ceska pistol that the gang was armed with, six rounds of ammunition as well as a drill that police suspected was used to break into people’s homes.

Police on mobile patrol were alerted about the gang’s suspicious activity in Mathare North by area residents, which prompted the officers to start trailing the blue Toyota Belta car the suspects were driving.

“Police tracked the suspects from the Kenya School of Monetary Studies up to Mathari Hospital,” said area DCIO Ndumba Thangalani.

The suspects defied the police’s order to stop, and instead opened fire on the officers, he said.

Police returned fire, spraying the Toyota with bullets, killing all three occupants on the spot.

Their bodies were taken to City Mortuary.

Mr Thangalani said that a forensics team was working to identify the suspects using fingerprints swept from the car since no identification was found on the bodies.

No police officers were injured in the 10pm incident.
