Two killed in shootout with police at Nairobi's Mbagathi Way

Two policemen were seriously injured Friday in a shootout with a gang.
Two suspects were killed and a gun recovered.
Police said they had launched a hunt for the gang after a tip-off.
The operation between Ngumo and Industrial Area culminated in an exchange of fire.
The gang is believed to have been behind the killing of former Nation journalist Tony Kago in September.
Nairobi deputy county commander Moses Ombati said a victim, who had earlier been attacked in Rongai, saw the suspects in a vehicle at a petrol station and alerted the police.
Flying Squad officers rushed to the scene and found the three men. After about 10 minutes, the three left the petrol station in a silver Toyota Premio for Industrial Area through Mbagathi Way, Langata and Bunyala roads and finally Dakar Street.
On reaching around the gate of Unga Feeds, they stopped the vehicle and made a few calls. They were then joined by three other men in a blue Toyota Sprinter. They talked briefly and then swapped the cars. The elite police squad in unmarked vehicle was still trailing them.
They drove back to the Shell petrol station where two other men were waiting for them in a white Toyota Allion. They got into the car and started driving towards Ngumo estate.
On reaching the gate of the Mbagathi District hospital, the officers decided to challenge them to stop, unaware that the occupants of a white Mercedes Benz that was behind them, was part of the gang.
The suspect who was seated on the back left seat of the car in front got out started shooting at the officers. He was shot dead and when the driver got out, he was also shot dead. The third gunman escaped.
Also recovered were nine rounds of 9mm ammunition, three mobile phones, master keys, and different ATM cards.
Immediately, two of the occupants of the Mercedes benz that was trailing them shot and seriously injured the two officers before they made a U-turn and sped off along Mbagathi Way.
Mr Ombati said police were looking for the suspects who escaped.
