Wajir, Mandera, Kitui and Migori are some of the counties with the lowest number of crime incidents reported to police, a new police report says.

Released Friday, the National Police Annual Crime report shows Wajir had the lowest crime index between January and November this year at 22 per 100,000 persons in the county.

According to report, Mandera County had 43 cases, Kitui (77), Migori (76), Turkana (89), Homa Bay (97) and Marsabit (99).

Apart from sporadic attacks by suspected al-Shabaab militia, mainly in northern parts of the country, no major crime incidents have been reported in these areas.

On the other hand, Lamu County, the report says, had the highest number of crime cases reported to security officers, with an index of 532 per 100,000 people. Other counties in this category are Taita Taveta (327), Mombasa (318), Isiolo (276), Meru (267), Kirinyaga (259), Elgeyo Marakwet (248), Kiambu (244), Nairobi (243) and Nandi (242).

One of the major crime incidents at the Coast, the document says, was the attack by the Mombasa Republican Council adherents, who mainly targeted police officers and election officials— almost disrupting the 2013 General Election.

TERRORIST ATTACKS

Out of the 19 people killed, 11 were police officers. Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo said police acted swiftly and managed to contain the situation, paving the way for a peaceful poll. “A total of 118 suspects were arrested and arraigned in court,” he said.

In some of these areas, police also faced the challenge of terrorist attacks, organised criminal gangs, clan conflicts, fatal road accidents, drug trafficking, cattle rustling and poaching among others.

A total of 111 people were killed and another 283 injured by Al-Shabaab, which staged major attacks in Nairobi, Mombasa, Wajir, Mandera among others.

“The major incident was staged at the Westgate Mall in Nairobi where a total of 71 lives were lost. Several suspects in connection with these acts were arrested and arraigned in court,” said Mr Kimaiyo.

Incidents of kidnapping were also reported, especially between June and October, mostly in Nairobi and central Kenya.

Deputy Inspector-General in charge of AP Samuel Arachi revealed that most crimes were committed by repeat offenders.
