Police in Kilifi County have launched a manhunt for a suspected rapist, who escaped from Bamba Police Station while handcuffed.

The incident happened last Saturday. The man was to be charged this week with defiling a Standard Six schoolgirl in Ganze in September last year.

County Police Commander Douglas Kanja said that apart from the search for the suspect, an inquiry file had been opened at Bamba Police Station.

“Anyone with information on what might have transpired on that day should go and report so that we can have proper information on the escapee,” he said.

Mr Kanja said the officer who was handling the suspect at the time of the escape has recorded a statement.

Officers at the station are on the spot over the manner in which they handled the suspect after he was presented to them by the father of the victim and a Kenya Wildlife Service officer who arrested him.

The suspect runs a boda boda business in Ganze and has reportedly been bragging that he is untouchable.

Mr Kanja revealed that the man ran away after he hoodwinked the policeman into taking him to the toilets to relieve himself.

“The handcuff was unlocked on one side and he managed to escape unnoticed as the officer waited for him to finish the call of nature. We are investigating this issue and if it is found that the officer did not act professionally, then action shall be taken against him,” he said.

The victim’s father said he reported the case to Bamba Police Station in September last year after the suspect impregnated his 16-year-old daughter.

“I noticed that my daughter was pregnant in September last year and when I interrogated her, she told me that the suspect had been defiling her.

“I took her to the police station, where we recorded a statement and filled in the P3 Form,” he said.

His daughter gave birth in March this year.

Last Friday, he got wind of where the man was and quickly went to arrest him in the company of the KWS officer.

“When we arrested him, the KWS officer called the Ganze OCPD, who arrived and together, we took the suspect to Bamba Police Station where the matter was recorded in the OB (occurrence book),” he said.
