Uganda police have released opposition leader Kizza Besigye who had been arrested on his way to a public rally in Kampala's central business district, an area blocked out from opposition leaders.

He had flouted orders from Kampala Central Police Station DPC Aaron Baguma, who suggested he use Mukwana Road to access the capital.

Mr Besigye is one of the eight candidates hoping to unseat incumbent President Yoweri Museveni.

He was held at Kira Road police station.
