President Uhuru Kenyatta has travelled to Addis Ababa for the Igad Summit on violence in South Sudan as African leaders push for lasting peace solutions in the young nation.

Fresh fighting erupted in Juba earlier last month between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and those supporting vice-president Riek Machar, threatening to move South Sudan back to civil war.

The renewed hostilities undermined a peace deal signed last August between parties involved in the South Sudan conflict.

Presidents Kenyatta, Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni and Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn helped mediate the negotiations that culminated in the signing of the peace agreement.

The plane carrying Mr Kenyatta departed Jomo Kenyatta International Airport shortly after 1pm.

The President was seen off at the airport by Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery and other senior government officials.
