A Parliament’s long-serving barman was on Tuesday rewarded by President Uhuru Kenyatta for exemplary service to lawmakers in the privileged pub, slightly hidden in the precincts of the House.

Mr Andrew Gicheha served in Parliament for 33 years, first as a waiter in the restaurant then a barman and was on Tuesday rewarded with a Head of State Commendation for not only his long service but also for his dedication in ensuring his patrons got their favourite drinks.

Mr Gicheha, 57, whose favourite patrons included President Kenyatta, former President Mwai Kibaki and the late John Michuki, was ecstatic upon getting the award on Tuesday.

“I am really happy for being recognised for the number of years I have worked here.

There are others who have served but they did not get any recognition. I did not expect it. I was just called to come get it,” said Mr Gicheha, who retired in 2014.

Although the bar is located next to the main restaurant it is not easily visible for an ordinary visitor. It is also restricted to only sitting MPs and Senators and it is never short of patrons mostly from 7pm.

“I served President Kibaki when he was here and today if we meet he would not have to be reminded who I am. He knows me by name. President Kenyatta was my MP. We come from the same location. He also knows me very well,” he told the Nation.

Mr Gicheha, HSC, was given the insignia marking his new status by Senate Speaker Ekwee Ethuro at Parliament Buildings on Tuesday.
