Pressure mounts on polls chiefs to quit

Pressure for the disbandment of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) continued Monday as the Commission on Administrative Justice joined the fray.
Chairman Otiende Amollo said IEBC lacks credibility and called on its commissioners to step aside saying Kenyans deserve an electoral body they can trust.
Dr Amollo spoke as Cord vowed to continue piling pressure on IEBC bosses to resign through the planned countrywide demonstrations.
He said stepping aside will help tone down the heat their continued stay has generated.
“I raised this issue at the start of the year. In our report, we advised that IEBC commissioners to voluntarily step aside. I still hold the same opinion today,” he told the Nation.
He added: “We can only have fair and free elections if the current IEBC commissioners leave and new ones appointed.”
And in a statement read by Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo, the coalition says the push for commissioners to leave office is unstoppable.
Mr Midiwo dismissed warnings by Deputy President William Ruto saying they will move to the IEBC offices at Anniversary Towers next Monday to push for the disbandment.
Meanwhile, Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi on Monday said disbanding the IEBC is long overdue.
“Since last year, we have been saying that IEBC must go. This must happen before the next elections,” Mr Mudavadi said when he attended a church service in Madaraka PAG Church.
