Pressure piles up to sack Chirchir

Four ODM legislators Thursday piled pressure on President Kenyatta to sack Cabinet Secretary for Energy Davis Chirchir over corruption claims.

Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi said they will soon start collecting signatures in support of a motion seeking to compel the President to dismiss Mr Chirchir.

Mr Wandayi, who read a statement on behalf of his colleagues, Taita Taveta Woman Representative Joyce Lay, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi and Nominated MP Isaac Mwaura, accused the minister of violating the Constitution by his continued stay in the office in light of ‘grave’ allegations against him.

CORRUPT OFFICER

“We have decided to take this route because the President is unwilling to act on the matter to safeguard the Constitution by appearing to shield a corrupt officer,” Mr Wandayi said.

Mr Chirchir is named as the recipient of a bribe in a case filed in a London court against a firm that supplied the defunct Interim Independent Electoral Commission with ballot papers when the minister was a commissioner.

He has not responded to the allegations and the Opposition coalition Cord has been pushing for his removal since the scam that has acquired the “chickengate scandal” nickname was reported over a week ago.

“Our aim is to protect the Constitution and to restore the image of our country,” they said.

If the motion is driven through to the House, it will only add to the pressure the President has been facing to act on members of his administration, accused of graft or non-performance.

Both Cord and Jubilee MPs have asked the President to sack Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Ole Lenku over increased insecurity in the country.
