Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar has called for the investigation of Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet and Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery over failure to stop extrajudicial killings and forced disappearances.

Senator Omar said it was time a formidable league of professional lawyers was put together for private prosecutions against past and current commanders who bear responsibility for security.

“The IG is not in a position to investigate this; therefore, an independent commission must investigate the him, past and current security ministers and all others who presided over the security machinery,” said Mr Omar.

He added: “There has been an issue of command responsibilities. It’s not a question of you pulling a trigger, it’s a question of Nkaissery and Boinnet consistently being unable to stop this action of disappearance.”

Mr Omar was referring to the recent killing of a man in Malindi over terror suspicions, as well as those of lawyer Willy Kimani, his client and a taxi driver in Nairobi.

The legislator spoke at a joint press briefing at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) offices in Mwembe-Tayari, Mombasa.

In a joint statement with Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir and more than 10 human rights groups, they said it was saddening that the senseless killings had become a common occurrence across the country.

The groups condemned the alleged brutal extrajudicial killings of innocent Kenyans.
