Professor Ali Mazrui laid to rest in Mombasa

The late Prof Ali Mazrui was laid to rest Sunday in Mombasa.

The renowned scholar was buried at the Mazrui cemetery opposite Fort Jesus in Mombasa Old Town area.

The last prayers were conducted by former Chief Kadhi Sheikh Hammad Kassim.

Leaders who attended the burial include Mining Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala, Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar and county Governor Hassan Joho.

The scholar’s body arrived early Sunday aboard a Turkish airliner from New York and touched down at the Mombasa International Airport at 2.35am.

The body was taken to his family home at Mombasa's Old Town at around 4am.

Prayers for the late scholar were held at the Mabruk Mosque before burial.
