Raila says Uhuru statement on Mpeketoni unfortunate, wants officials sacked

Cord leader Raila Odinga has termed President Uhuru Kenyatta’s statement linking Mpeketoni attacks to politics as unjustified, unfortunate and likely to compromise investigations.

Mr Odinga said President Kenyatta’s statement ignored other countries and experts' position that the attack had been carried out by the Somali group Al Shabaab and that it does not claim responsibility for attacks that it has not carried out.

Speaking at a Press conference in Nairobi Mr Odinga called for the sacking of Cabinet and Principal Secretaries responsible for Defence and Internal Security, heads of intelligence, police and criminal investigations.

Mr Odinga said the officials had “exhibited incompetence and dereliction their duty in the performance of their responsibility under the law.”

The former Prime Minister further called for a reconstitution of Kenya’s security organs to guarantee national security and ensure recruitment is done “to reflect the diversity of the Kenyan people in equitable proportions.”

A judicial commission of inquiry to investigate Westgate and Mpeketoni attack would help to bring to book perpetrators of the heinous crimes, he said.
