A man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping a 13-year-old girl.

Isiah Saiteu Kamairu was handed the jail term on Thursday.

He committed the offence in Olosentu village, Trans Mara West Sub-County, Narok County, between September 26 and 29, 2014.

Kamairu appeared before Kilgoris senior resident magistrate Dennis Matutu and was charged with rape.

PHONE NUMBER

He faced an alternative charge of engaging in an indecent act with a child.

The court was told that Kamairu gave the teenager his phone number while she was on her way to Kilgoris town. The two became friends and the girl would call him.

In September 2014, he lured her into his house in Olosentu village, where they stayed together for three days. This is the time he raped her.

When the girl returned home, she initially lied to her parents that she had been to her grandmother’s house.

Investigations by her relatives, however, revealed that she was a victim of rape. The family eventually preferred charges against the man.

Put on his defence, Kamairu denied committing the offence.

He said the charges were a falsehood fabricated by the chief of the are and the witnesses.

“The alleged victim’s own testimony that the accused defiled her finds corroboration in the medical evidence adduced,” said Mr Matutu.
