Red Cross says it settled water bills 10 years ago

Relief agency the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has denied claims that it did not pay water bills during its tenancy at a Nairobi building 10 years ago.

ICRC said it paid all its water bills and has receipts to prove it.

However, the relief agency said it discovered towards the end of its tenancy that the water meter in the building had ShSh632, 004 arrears from the previous occupant.

ICRC, through a statement in response to story published on Nation, said it had been following-up on this issue to ensure that the bill is cleared from the organisation's account.  

On Thursday, Nairobi City and Water Sewerage Company released a list of defaulters claiming the owed the firm millions in unpaid water bills.

“Notice is hereby given to the below listed customers of Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company Limited to clear their outstanding bills within 7 days of this notice; failure to which the company will take legal action,” the firm said in a statement indicating the names of more defaulters will be published.

Among those listed were ICRC and the Presbyterian Church of East Africa.

The list claimed the church owes the city Sh2,305,359.
