Three non-governmental organisations want Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario, Principal Secretary Richard Ekai and National Olympic committee chairman Kipchoge Keino to resign over the Rio Olympics fiasco.

Transparency International, Centre for Multi-Party Democracy and Society for International Development further threatened to take the matter to court if the officials stay put.

“We are concerned that unless swift, decisive and ruthless action is taken a bigger national shame awaits Kenya as we prepare to host the World Youth Athletics in July 2017.

"The State and all stakeholders must act now to stem corruption in sports,” said Mr Samuel Kimeu of TI-Kenya.

He was accompanied by CMD’s Irene Tindi and SID’s Irungu Houghton.

They spoke at SID offices in Nairobi Thursday.

ETHICAL RESPONSIBILITY

In a joint statement they added: “Top leadership in the ministry and sports management must take full political, financial and ethical responsibility.

“Their actions have brought shame and disrepute to Kenya, local and global sports sponsors like Nike.”

Dr Wario has since disbanded NOC-K and appointed a probe committee.

The NGOs also want “known whistle-blowers” appointed to the investigations team.

The fiasco is also being investigated by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
