Retired President Daniel Moi marks 91st birthday

Former President Moi on Wednesday celebrated his 91st birthday with students of Kabarak University.

Addressing students and members of staff outside the Daniel T. Moi Library, where he planted a coniferous tree, Mzee Moi urged Kenyans to trust in God.

“I stand here to thank God for taking care of me since I was born and up to this day. The things he has done to me and the gifts he has given me in many ways I thank him,” he said.

Mr Moi, who was accompanied by Kabarak University Chancellor Jonas Kaleli and the former president's private secretary, Mr Lee Njiru, also received a birthday gift from the Kabarak University community.

WOKE UP EARLY

University Chaplain Jacob Kibor, while echoing Mr Moi's sentiments, said Kenyans stood to reap enormous benefits if they let God take control of their lives.

Mr Njiru said the retired President woke up early for his morning prayers and Bible study before visiting the university grounds for the brief ceremony.

The former head of state later returned to his residence for a private meeting with family members.

Mr Moi, a former teacher, ruled Kenya for 24 years and represented Baringo Central constituency in Parliament for over 50 years.

SHUNNED POLITICS

Unlike his previous two birthdays, the Wednesday event was low-key and organisers ensured that Mr Moi spent only a brief moment with the public.

Mr Moi, who has remained vocal on issues affecting the country, avoided current affairs and politics.

On his 89th birthday, Mount Kenya University sponsored a mega birthday party for him.

Last year’s birthday party was also a big bash attended by politicians and dignitaries from Kenya and beyond.

Students from the university's campuses in Kenya, Rwanda and South Sudan entertained guests and family.
