An MP wants security personnel in private wildlife conservancies in Laikipia County investigated over rhino poaching.
Laikipia East MP Anthony Mutahi said Kenya would lose all rhinos by 2030 if the rate at which they are being killed is not checked.
“We must ask ourselves hard questions regarding the kind of poaching that we are witnessing,” he said. “The trend points to security lapse in some of these ranches.”
KILLING OF FOUR RHINOS
County Commissioner Wilson Wanyanga formed a six-member task force to investigate rising cases of poaching in the county following the killing of four rhinos at the Ol Jogi Conservancy last week.
The task force will visit all conservancies in the region and propose, within four days, ways of protecting rhinos.
Speaking during a presentation of a CDF cheque at Tharua Secondary School on Saturday, Mr Mutahi urged the team to investigate the matter thoroughly.
“We are shocked that four rhinos can be killed few kilometres from the Ol Jogi main house where there are dozens of security personnel,” he said.
