Nearly 400,000 national identity cards are yet to be collected across the country even as Kenyans get ready to vote in the General Election next year.

Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho on Wednesday said that 375,963 processed identity cards are lying in various issuing offices.

Dr Kibicho tweeted this in response to numerous complaints he had been receiving concerning delays in the issuing of the cards.

“We have checked the waiting card numbers that have been sent in by those complaining and have found that almost 100 per cent of those cards were ready for collection,” the PS told the Nation yesterday.

“It seems most of the people complaining have not bothered to go pick up their cards at the issuing stations,” he added.

About 100,000 identity cards are processed every month, but last December was an especially busy month that saw more than 350,000 registrations carried out.

Dr Kibicho said the surge in registration can be attributed to the  General Election around the corner.

“I think it is sad that some politicians will even take advantage of the situation to say that some cards are being withheld deliberately by the government,” he said.

About 57,500 cards are lying in Huduma Centres while the rest are in the respective county government offices depending on where a person registered.
