Rio Olympics top Google most searched list in August

Kenyans went online to look for information on the 2016 Olympic Games in August.

A list of search trends released by Google on Thursday showed the Rio Olympics occupied eight of the 10 most trending searches.

Kenya won 13 medals six gold, an equal number of silver and 1 bronze.

To enable searchers to tabs on the games, Google enhanced the search experience by rolling out the Search Olympic OneBox, which made it easier for people to find all Olympics-related information, including a clear schedule of events, information about the athletes, medal counts as well as trending topics and the Trends Olympic Hub that highlighted key moments in the game.

The English Premier League (EPL) was the second most trending search, following the kick-off of the 2016-2017 season after a three-month break.

Former President Mwai Kibaki was the third trending search after news of his illness broke.

The 84-year-old former President is still receiving treatment in South Africa.

Fourth on the list was Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt after he won three gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay at the Rio Olympics in Brazil, sealing his status as one of the greatest sprinters in history.

Julius Yego, also known as the YouTube Man, was the fifth trending search after he won silver despite suffering an ankle injury.

Other trending searches were: Lucas Perez after Arsenal Football Club coach Arsene Wenger said the club would be spending £50 million to sign the Spanish striker; David Rudisha, who won a gold medal in the 800m race; and Simone Biles, the 19-year-old American gymnast who became the individual all-around, vault and floor gold medallist at the Rio Olympics.

In the "what is" category, many Kenyans sought to find out the meaning of "KBRR", putting "What is KBRR?" at the top the list.

The Kenya Banks' Reference Rate (KBRR) is a benchmark rate prescribed by the Central Bank for pricing all floating/variable/flexible interest rate loans or credit facilities.

The search was prompted by President Uhuru Kenyatta's signing of a Bill that caps bank interest rates on loans at four per cent above the Central Bank rate.

The other most searched term was "What is the meaning of WCW?", as Kenyans went online to find the meaning of the popular hashtag used on social media platforms the hashtag's initials stand for "Woman Crush Wednesday".
