  • Rotich told Parliament that list of 52,338 retired teachers provided by the group was in conflict with what the Ministry of Education had, which stood at 31,000.
  • The CS told MPs a technical team had been formed to determine the right amount to pay.

The government has slashed by almost half the number of retired teachers to benefit from a Sh16.7 billion pension payout saying the figures provided did not tally with its records.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich told Parliament’s Committee on Implementation that a figure of 52,338 retired teachers provided by the group was in conflict with what the Ministry of Education had, which stood at 31,000.

SAME AMOUNT

However, despite the reduction in numbers of those pushing for a revised pension for teachers, who retired in 1997, the funds amounting to Sh16.7 billion to the beneficiaries remained the same.

“It is not the retired teachers or their lawyer that have the accurate number of beneficiaries but that information is in the government records,” he said.

Mr Rotich said Sh1.5 billion had been allocated in the supplementary budget to pay the retired teachers, but was put to task on why the government had reneged on earlier commitment to settle the whole amount.

The CS told MPs a technical team had been formed to determine the right amount to pay.
