Ruto demands action to end exam cheating

Deputy President William Ruto has directed the Education ministry to develop within a month a strategy to address cheating in national examinations.

Mr Ruto said the Government would not stand by and watch the integrity of exams being eroded.

He asked Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to deal with individuals within its departments and schools who participated in the leakage of tests.

The Deputy President also asked the Kenya National Examinations Council leadership to improve the way they administer exams or they “ship out”.

“We have to deal with those who are undermining the integrity of our examinations through cheats. They are doing a great disservice to hardworking students in our schools,” said Mr Ruto.

He said widespread cheating in tests was tainting the image of education in the country.

The DP said the Government is providing the education sector with a lot resources, and will not accept its erosion through exam malpractices.

Mr Ruto was speaking at Alliance Girls High School in Kiambu Country during celebrations to mark 68 years of its existence and a funds drive for the construction of a chapel.

The 2015 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exam recorded the highest cases of irregularities, at 70 per cent.

A total of 5,101 candidates had their results cancelled, with 46 out 47 counties involved in irregularities.

During the exam period, 171 individuals were arrested and charged in court with committing various offences related to the tests.

Among those arrested were 11 school principals and deputy principals.
