What you need to know:

  • The team has up to early next year to come up with the draft that will set in motion the process of starting a legal framework to address past injustices.
  • The taskforce has eight months to come up with the legislation.

The taskforce on historical land injustices will start collecting views from the public this month.

The opinion will be included in a draft Bill to be tabled in Parliament.

The team, which is a project of the National Land Commission (NLC), has up to early next year to come up with the draft that will set in motion the process of starting a legal framework to address past injustices.

The chairman of the taskforce, Dr Samuel Tororei, said on Monday that despite recommendations by previous commissions, including the Truth Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC), it had not been easy to address past injustices without a legal framework.

NO FRAMEWORK

“We need to come up with a Bill that is going to define all injustices and help in the quest for national unity, cohesion and peace,” he said.

Dr Tororei was updating members of the Kenya Editors’ Guild at the Sarova Stanley Hotel in Nairobi on the progress the team had made since it was set up in June 2014.

The taskforce has eight months to come up with the legislation.
