The Speaker of the Senate has called for accountability in counties saying it is the element of good governance.

Mr Ekwee Ethuro said the Senate has been summoning governors to account for funds but some go to court to block investigations.

“These are public funds and we must account for them, you cannot receive resources and don’t expect to be audited on them.

“We invite our honourable governors but they would rather run to the High Court,” Mr Ethuro said.

He said that devolution has brought hope to the country over development.

“Every year counties are guaranteed to get resources from the national government, more than what they generate at the county level,” Mr Ethuro said.

Mr Ethuro was addressing Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya (ICPSK) at the 20th Annual International Conference at Sarova Whitesands in Mombasa.

The Speaker also urged Kenyans to unite as the country heads to the 2017 polls.

“Irrespective of our political status, we must remain as one united country. All of us must take the responsibility to ensure that this country is better than we found it.

“We are preparing for the next elections, our mantra should be elections come and go, leaders come and go but Kenyans must remain united,” he said.
