Senators want the term of the Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution extended to enable it to supervise the drafting of some Bills.

They said it was not possible to make laws required by the Constitution without the commission.

This is likely to put senators on a collision with their counterparts in the National Assembly.

CIC’s term ends on December 29. The National Assembly is allowed by the Constitution to extend its term.

When they met CIC commissioners on Wednesday at Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, the members of the Senate Legal Affairs and Human Rights Committee, said the commission was playing an important role in ensuring the passage of laws.

Committee Chairman Amos Wako (Busia) vouched for the extension. “The National Assembly has extended the time for the enactment of the remaining Bills by a year. There is, therefore, a need to extend the commission’s term by at least two years,” Mr Wako, a former attorney-general, said.

Mr Mutula Kilonzo Jr (Makueni) said it was important to look at the extent to which the supreme law has been implemented when deciding whether to extend CIC’s term.
