At least 30 people were injured, 11 of them critically, after two buses they were travelling in collided head-on on the Garsen-Witu-Lamu road.

The incident involved a Tawakal bus travelling from Lamu to Mombasa and a TSS bus.

Tana Delta OCPD Robinson Thuku confirmed the accident and said he was on his way to the scene.

“The OCS is at the scene and he has told me they are waiting for the ambulances on site to ferry the injured (to hospitals),” said Mr Thuku.

The TSS driver was trapped inside his vehicle and a breakdown vehicle was on site to pull the buses apart.

The accident has caused a heavy traffic jam along the busy road.

That section of the highway is reportedly narrow due to overgrowth of vegetation on the roadside, specifically the Prosopis juliflora that is locally referred to as the mathenge tree.
