A suspected Al-Shabaab militant has been injured in a gun battle at a Kenya Defence Forces camp in Garissa as he tried to enter the site.

Another suspect, who was armed with an unknown firearm, escaped, military spokesman Col David Obonyo said.

Col Obonyo said the two tried to enter the camp at around 1.30pm when soldiers guarding the camp challenged them.

“They instead responded by firing at the soldiers, who retaliated, attracting a fierce shooting in the camp,” Col Obonyo said.

He said during the exchange of fire, the armed militant escaped but his accomplice was badly injured and was arrested.

“The injured suspect has been taken to hospital. We still do not know the type of firearm they were using. Soldiers are, however, in pursuit of the suspect at large,” Col Obonyo said.

Police have also enhanced security in the county following the incident, National Police Service spokesman George Kinoti said, adding that the situation was under control.
