Somali Govt raps Kenya for diplomat's arrest

A security operation that led to the arrest of Mr Siyad Mohamud Shire is a violation of diplomatic ties, the Somali Government has said.

Mr Shire, a Political Consular at the Somali embassy in Kenya, was detained during the ongoing security operation in Nairobi. (READ: Illegal immigrants netted in swoop await deportation)

Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed said:

“The Somali Government seeks an official response from the Kenyan Government on the arrest of the Somali Consular to Kenya, Siyad Mohamud Shire, which is a serious violation of diplomatic immunity."

CREATE FEAR

“The Federal Government of Somalia continues to expresses serious concerns over the detention of law abiding Somali citizens in Kenya.

“Both our governments share the same security concerns, but the continued detention of innocent Somalis only serves to create an atmosphere of fear and mistrust that will result in dividing our communities, " he added.

The Prime Minister met with the Somali Ambassador to Kenya Mohamed Ali Nur, who arrived in Mogadishu on Sunday, after he was invited to give a briefing on the latest developments on the situation.

The meeting comes a day after a Cabinet meeting on the same. Mogadishu has since sent a request to the Kenyan Government to "approach the ongoing security operation in a manner that respects the rights and dignity of innocent Somalis in Kenya."
