Landlords in Makongeni, Nairobi, where a residential building collapsed last week, Tuesday appealed to the government not to demolish their properties.

They pledged to support authorities in investigating the cause of the collapse of the four-storey building.

The Makongeni/Kaloleni Ward Plot Owners and Developers Group said that the December 17 tragedy in which seven people were killed was an isolated case that should not imply that all buildings in the area are unsafe.

SUPPORT AUDIT

He spoke at Majimbo grounds in Makongeni, three flats away from where the incident occurred.

The landlords called upon the government to protect their properties, saying they acquired their plots legally.

Meanwhile, scrap metal dealers crushed remnants of concrete slabs and helped themselves to pieces of steel bars while others scavenged the waterlogged concrete debris for valuables.
