Muturi to rule on removal of MP from House teams

What you need to know:

  • Mr Mwashetani said the letter to remove him from the House Business Committee.

  • The Lunga Lunga MP was also removed from two other committees.

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi will decide whether Lunga Lunga MP Khatib Mwashetani’s removal from parliamentary committees was legal after Jubilee MPs joined the rebel Ford-Kenya MP in protesting against the decision.

Mr Mwashetani said the letter to remove him from the House Business Committee; and the Environment and Natural Resources Committee came from Minority Whip Thomas Mwadeghu, yet it should have originated from his party.

He had also been removed from the now defunct Budget and Appropriations Committee, whose term MPs refused to renew over attempts by its members to have Sh5 billion allocated to projects in their constituencies.

“The procedure followed for me to be dewhipped was not procedural,” said Mr Mwashetani.

Jubilee MPs Johnson Sakaja and Jamleck Kamau supported Mr Mwashetani and used the opportunity to accuse the Opposition of undermining democracy by taking action against rebels.

But Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma described the removal of Mr Mwashetani from the teams as the natural consequence of his association with Jubilee.
