Terrorism, radicalisation in focus as spy chiefs meet

What you need to know:

  • Spy chiefs, under the Committee of Intelligence and Security Services of Africa, will exchange intelligence experiences.
  • The spy chiefs will also analyse profiles of the most notorious terror gangs in the continent.

Radicalisation and extremism are on the agenda as African heads of security and intelligence services begin a meeting in Nairobi.

The security chiefs, who are meeting to discuss continental insecurity, are expected to delve into the two issues that have been linked to terrorism in many countries, including Kenya.

African Union’s Special Representative for the Anti-Terrorism Commission Francisco Caetano Madiera said the meeting would give special focus to the root causes of youth radicalisation in Africa and analyse terrorism activities in hotspots such as Somalia, Nigeria, the Central Africa Republic, Liberia, Egypt and Libya.

“Africa’s security is deteriorating considerably because terror groups like Boko Haram, Ansar al-Sharia, Al-Shabaab and Al-Qaeda keep coming up with new tactics,” he said.

“But that does not mean that we are defeated.”
