Two MPs have demanded immediate action against police officers who may have downplayed a report on the gang-rape of a pupil in Busia. (READ: Brave Busia girl battles as her rapists go scot free)

Busia County MP Florence Mutua and her Suba counterpart Millie Odhiambo-Mabona said it was sad that more than three months since she was abused the Standard Eight pupil is yet to get justice.

The MPs said they would push for an amendment to the relevant law to ensure prompt action is taken against sexual offenders.

Ms Odhiambo, a child rights campaigner said she would introduce a Victims Protection Bill. “From past cases, it is evident that in focus shifts from the victim to the perpetrators. Once the accused is punished people forget about the victim’’, she said.

Ms Mutua said children should be protected saying many suffer in silence. She spoke in Maanzoni, Machakos on the sidelines of a National Assembly committee meeting.

“As parents, we need to  constantly talk to our youth and guide them from an early age. If a pupil in Standard 8 can be accused of rape and sexual violence, then there is a problem,’’ Ms Mutua said at a funeral in Butula.

Ms Mutua, who paid for the girl’s initial tests appealed to villagers to cooperate and ensure the suspects face justice. She visited the girl at the Gynaecare Hospital and criticised some people who want the girl’s mother to withdraw the case.
