Students spend night at police stations after school fire

Several students from Ruiga Girls Secondary School in Meru spent the night at various police stations after they escaped from school following a fire.

Other students are said to have gone home while the rest sought refuge at teachers' houses.

A dormitory, a science laboratory and a dining hall were burnt in the 5pm fire on Sunday.

The school has 398 students, who left the school immediately after the fire broke out.

On Sunday night, Imenti Central OCPD Boniface Lisiolo said police were combing bushes in search of students while teachers were busy putting out the fire.

"Police used our vehicles and the school bus to trace the girls. However, none were found in the night search. Some have been found at police stations while others are said to have gone home. We are investigating the incident," Mr Lisiolo said.
