A suspected robber was Saturday night shot dead in a shootout with police while three others escaped in Nakuru, after carjacking a taxi driver in Nyeri town.

The driver of the taxi identified as Charles Kinyua is still missing following the carjacking at around 9 pm by the armed robbers who posed as customers.

The driver’s employer became suspicious after the tracking device installed in the car showed the vehicle entering Kabiruini Forest a few kilometers from Nyeri town.

A few hours later the Silver Toyota Fielder, was tracked to Nyahururu town forcing the owner of the vehicle to alert authorities of a possible carjacking.

The occupants of the vehicle are said to have made several stop overs in Nyahururu and Nakuru as the car’s automated kill switch was engaged remotely by the owner.

Police officers were alerted and the robbers were intercepted at Bondeni where a gunfight ensued. One of the suspects was gunned down as his three partners escaped. A bloody knife is said to have been found inside the car.

The driver of the taxi could not be located and his colleagues and police officers in Nyeri spent Sunday morning combing Kabiruini forest.

“What we know so far is that the vehicle has been found and that there was a knife in the car and a lot of blood. But as of now we are still searching for the driver,” said the OCPD.
