A worker’s union has urged the Teachers Service Commission to back down from hiring of nursery school teachers saying it is the duty of the county government.

According to Kenya County Government Worker’s Union general secretary Roba Duba, county governments have the budgetary allocation and the Constitutional mandate to do so.

“The TSC should allow the county governments empowered by fourth schedule of the Constitution of Kenya, part two subsection 9 to do so,” he said in a statement.

LACK OF FUNDS

“It is disturbing that a lame duck such as the TSC should want to take up the responsibility yet it had failed in securing enough teachers for primary and secondary schools because of lack of funds,” Mr Duba added.

He said the priority should be to increase the number of teachers in rural settings where schools of 300 pupils only have two to three teachers in attendance.
