TSC to recruit 2,189 teachers to replace those who have left

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced the recruitment of 2,189 new teachers to replace those who have left the service.
TSC’s chief executive officer Nancy Macharia said 1,767 teachers would be posted in primary schools while 422 teachers are to teach in secondary schools and teachers’ colleges.
“Candidates for vacancies in primary schools must be holders of a P1 certificate and will be selected from the county merit list compiled during the July, 2015 recruitment exercise,” said Mrs Macharia.
The new teachers will replace those who have exited the service from May 1 to July 31 this year.
She added that candidates for post-primary institutions must be holders of at least a diploma in education.
The candidates should apply to the secretary of the school’s board of management in the institution where the vacancy has been advertised and submit a copy to the TSC county director not later than October 7.
The candidates are required to be Kenyan citizens aged 45 years and below and must be registered with the commission as teachers.
On Wednesday, Mrs Macharia warned applicants against fraudsters who might extort money from them while purporting to assist the candidates.
NEW RECRUITS
This month, TSC recruited 5,000 new teachers, with about 2,338 being posted to teach in primary schools and 2,662 teachers to secondary schools, technical training colleges and institutes of science and technology.
At the same time, the commission has announced competitive recruitment of 10 senior head teachers for primary schools in Nairobi County.
TSC on Wednesday advertised for the 10 positions, which are set to be vacant soon with the applicants being required to be Kenyan citizens and in possession of a P1 certificate and Bachelor of Education degree.
“A master’s degree and a management course will be an added advantage,” said Mrs Macharia, adding that qualified candidates have until October 7 to submit applications.
The applicants must also have 10 years’ experience as a head teacher and a proven track record of performance in the same position in at least two-streamed primary school.
The positions have previously been filled through direct appointments, raising concerns over possible abuse by some appointing authorities.
TSC chairperson Lydia Nzomo said in June that the new recruitment format would be rolled out gradually to cover schools and institutions in the counties, as part of a wider programmes to boost performance and merit through appraisals.
