National Social Security Fund (NSSF) board of trustees chairman Adan Mohamed’s three-year contract has expired as the anti-corruption agency said it was investigating the Sh5 billion Tassia housing project.

According to a legal notice seen by the Nation, Mr Mohamed was appointed by then Labour minister John Munyes from January 16, 2011 for a period of three years, which ended Thursday.

Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi is expected to either renew his term or appoint a new chairman.

By Thursday evening, the minister had recommended appointment of three trustees to the board — Mr Andrew Muigai, Mr Erastus Mwongera and Ms Veska Kangogo.

For the three years that Mr Mohamed has been the NSSF chairman, the provident fund has been riddled with scandals and allegations of corruption.

The Tassia project in Embakasi, Nairobi, is the latest. The manner in which funding for the multi-billion-shilling project was approved through e-mail has caused concerns.

Meanwhile, Mr Mohamed yesterday told a Parliamentary committee that owners of plots at the Tassia II Settlement Scheme would have to pay for infrastructure development.

He said owners of the 5,500 plots would be required to pay Sh920,000 for the works.

The NSSF does not use its money to make roads unless the government provides funds for that, he added.
