A teacher accused of sexually molesting six Njoro Girls High School students has been denied bail.

The teacher will remain in custody until all the students have testified.

Chief Magistrate Doreen Mulekyo said the case would be heard on a priority basis starting July 6.

The girls were allegedly indecently assaulted by the Kiswahili teacher, Mr Paul Gicheru.

State prosecutor Michael Rabera told the court that the teacher had started threatening the girls with dire consequences if they dared testify against him.

Mr Gicheru has denied sexually molesting the girls by touching their bosoms in the past year on separate occasions, calling the allegations a fabrication and a bid to tarnish his name.

Mr Rabera asked the court not to free the suspect on bond, for his own safety, as parents were angry and that the school was closed after students held demonstrations against the teacher.

But lawyer Karanja Mbugua dismissed the threat allegations, saying individual students would record affidavits providing proof that the teacher had contacted them.

He said Mr Gicheru had been interdicted and had no access to the boarding school, saying his mission was to clear his name as soon as possible so as to resume teaching.

Mr Mbugua said bail was a constitutional right for all accused persons and the State had a duty to provide security to all citizens.
