Teachers medical scheme delayed

What you need to know:

  • Unions accuse commission and the Treasury of dragging their feet.
  • Employer says the National Treasury is yet to release Sh6bn for the scheme.

A new medical scheme for teachers might be pushed to August since the National Treasury has not released Sh6 billion to run it.

Teachers Service Commission Chief Executive Officer Gabriel Lengoiboni said on Tuesday they are still waiting for the money. He asked the 288,060 teachers to be patient.

With only two months to the end of the financial year, the government has been slow in approving the deal with Aon Kenya Insurance Brokers that will give teachers a scheme they have been negotiating for year.

The highest package for inpatient would be Sh1 million and the lowest Sh300,000.

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers on Tuesday warned that its members were running out of patience.

Chairman Omboko Milemba said: “We fear that this cover may take long, given that the National Treasury and the commission are dragging their feet.”

Kenya National Union of Teachers Chairman Mudzo Nzili said: “We are meeting tomorrow to discuss the issue. We will inform members what we agree on.”
