The Teachers Service Commission has assured more than 6,635 teachers and secretariat staff who missed their April house allowances due to a technical hitch that they will be paid.

Commission head of communication Kihumba Kamotho said the directorate of public service management, which is in charge of the ICT platform – Integrated Personnel Payroll data – is working to rectify the problem.

“The affected employees will receive their full salaries once the anomaly is rectified. The commission regrets the error and wishes to most sincerely apologise to the affected employees,” Mr Kamotho said but did not specify when.

MISUSE OF RESOURCES

Teachers get between Sh3,500 and Sh40,000 as house allowance.

Kenya National Union of Teachers secretary-general Wilson Sossion asked the commission to put its house in order.

“We will not condone such excuses anymore,” Mr Sossion said adding that teachers needed money to pay their children’s school fees this week.

Meanwhile, Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has decried wastage of school resources, saying 57 per cent of funds meant to buy textbooks and other instructional materials were misused.

Dr Matiang’i said the wastage had created a situation where the 1:1 pupil to textbook ratio had not been attained in many schools.

“There cannot be quality curriculum delivery with such few or no textbooks,” Dr Matiang’i said.
