Two teams have been formed by the government to coordinate the burial of former First Lady Lucy Kibaki.

Government spokesman Eric Kiraithe said in a press statement that "a national working committee comprised of members of the Kibaki family and government officials has been set up, and is responsible for ensuring that the former First Lady is given a befitting send off. The committee is also responsible for releasing timely and coordinated information of interest to the public."

In Othaya, residents want joint prayer meetings in honour of the late Mama Lucy Kibaki held at Othaya Stadium as many wish her to be buried at her home at Kanyage.

Mr Josiah Mwangi, a resident, said it would be best for the burial to take place in Othaya as it was her home where she belongs. It would also indicate a sense of originality.

“This is her home and we shall deeply remember her as an influence to most development projects here that were supported by her husband who was the president for a decade and MP for 36 years,” said Mr Mwangi.

Mrs Theresa Wanjiru said: “If the burial were to take place here, it would give us an opportunity to serve her as she did to us. This will be done by at least having residents participate in sending her off.”

Mrs Wangari Kanyago, an immediate neighbour to the Kibakis’, said: “It would be a great honour for us to join in mourning our mum.”
