According to Army Commander Major General J. K. Kasaon, the country faces new challenges from Somali-based terrorists who use sophisticated technology to target people and infrastructure.

“The current threat is real and dynamic and poses the greatest challenge to our national cohesion,” he said in a speech read by his deputy Major General Johnson Ondieki during the 30th anniversary of the Engineers Brigade in Thika.

He added that the armed forces should also be prepared to deal with natural disasters experienced as a result of climate change and other man made calamities.

MORE EXPERTISE

“Being the experts in this field, the corps must be prepared for the ever expanding role of mitigating the effects of these calamities in support of other government agencies,” Lt. Gen Joseph Kasaon said.

The army chief urged the brigade leadership to carry out research geared at moving the unit forward “while taking cognizance that change is a permanent feature.”

Engineers Brigade Commander Brig George Owinow reiterated the need for more expertise in dealing with catastrophes.

“This Brigade should be more involved in research to come up with solutions to the problems that we encounter in combat,” he said.
