Ex South African president calls for improvement of education

Former South African president Thabo Mbeki called on universities in Africa to focus on quality teaching, which will enable learners to have the skills of tackling challenges such as poverty.
Mr Mbeki, who spoke yesterday in Nyeri at the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, said high standard learning will also enable the country achieve its development targets.
"We want educated Africans. Skilled people are needed and therefore quality education must be offered. Universities have a responsibility of assisting countries in achieving national development goals," he said.
EMPLOYMENT
He added that serious intellectual input is required for social-economic development of the continent.
The retired Head of State observed that despite Africa making commendable progress in various sectors, leaders must promote access to better education, clean water and employment opportunities.
And for harmony to prevail, he said the government must take up dialogue when addressing grievances.
"....government must talk to the people. It is critically important," he said.
He was conferred with a Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) by the institution.
