A hospital in Nairobi has been found guilty of negligence, leading to the death of electoral commissioner Thomas Letangule’s wife.

The Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board ruled that Family Care Medical Centre and Maternity Home failed in their duties in handling Ms Esther Kagwiria Letangule, leading to her death on April 10, 2013.

“The board finds that there was lack of coordination between the hospital management and the practitioners working at the time. The hospital failed to keep accurate medical records of the patient despite her being a regular patient, which amounted to professional negligence,” said the board.

COMPENSATE FAMILY

To atone for her death, the board ordered the hospital to initiate mediation with Mr Letangule and his children, with a view to agree on compensation within 90 days.

The board further ordered the hospital to pay Sh350,000 within 30 days as costs for the eight-member committee’s sitting.

“In addition, the hospital shall furnish the board’s chairman with a list of all their staff and their qualifications. They will also constitute an advisory committee to hold monthly meetings and report to the board the hospital’s status after every three months.”

Also punished was Dr Eric Sagwa, whom the medical practitioners board said failed to review the patient’s medical history to recommend appropriate emergency treatment.
