Three GSU officers die, five injured in Kabarnet accident

Three General Service Unit (GSU) officers died on Tuesday and three others injured after their vehicle rolled at a sharp bend on Kabarnet-Iten road, National Police Service spokesman George Kinoti confirmed.

The vehicle was carrying ten officers who were headed to the Tot GSU camp from Kapendo when the accident occured.

Eye witnesses said that the police Land Cruiser was speeding as it was negotiating a sharp bend at Kaptimbor area.

The vehicle is said to have rolled several times with two officers dying on the spot while a third one died on the way to hospital.

Several officers sustained serious injuries but the Inspector who was in charge and another constable escaped unhurt.

The injured were rushed to the Baring County Hospital before being transferred to Eldoret for specialised treatment.

Baringo County Police Co-ordinator Peter Ndung'u and County Commissioner Peter Okwanyo confirmed the incident.

"Its true we've lost three officers. Three others sustained injuries. Of these, two are out of danger and are at observation room at the county referral hospital in Kabarnet. One sustained serious injuries and has been rushed to Eldoret for specialised medical attention," Mr Ndung'u told the Nation.

Residents have called on the government to erect bumps and road signs along the highway to avoid further accidents.
