Three people died on the spot and 14 others seriously injured when a matatu they were travelling in collided with a truck near Mtwapa in Kilifi County on Saturday.

The matatu was heading to Mombasa from Kilifi when the accident occurred at 7pm. The victims were a man and two women.

Kilifi OCPD Justine Nyaga confirmed the death of the three passengers.

“The accident was caused by a motorcyclist who suddenly stopped in the middle of the road after he was waved down by a customer,” Mr Nyaga said.

It was while the matatu was trying to avoid hitting the cyclist that the accident happened.

The injured were rushed to the nearby Oasis Medical Centre before they were transferred to Coast General Hospital. However, Mr Nyaga added that both vehicles were speeding at the time of the accident.

“Motorists must be more careful as reckless driving is causing many accidents,” he said.

A witnesses, Mr Daniel Kithi, said the matatu driver was overtaking another vehicle only to run into a motorcyclist.

“He swerved and that is when the matatu collided head-on with the truck,” said Mr Kithi.
