Ownership of more than 350,000 acres of illegally acquired land has been revoked in Lamu County.

Title deeds for the 353,770 acres of land were cancelled and the land returned to Lamu County for public use.

Land Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi told the Presidential Strategic Communications Unit (PSCU) on Tuesday evening that among the revoked documents were title deeds for 12 parcels whose notice of revocation had expired.

Prof Kaimenyi disclosed that more title deeds for land acquired irregularly will be revoked and returned to the public for “farming and other development”.

Earlier on Tuesday, President Uhuru Kenyatta met leaders from Lamu County at State House, Mombasa, and advised them to use the land for the benefit of their people.

“You can set aside land for industries, markets and other public amenities that will directly improve the lives of the people,” he said.

President Kenyatta will start a two-day visit to Lamu County on Thursday and is expected to issue title deeds to land owners in seven villages in Mkunumbi.
