Keriako Tobiko orders probe into Migori ODM rally chaos

Joho labels Migori chaos as an assassination attempt

Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko has directed criminal investigators to look into the chaos that rocked an ODM rally in Migori.

In a letter to Director of Criminal Investigations Ndegwa Muhoro on Tuesday, Mr Tobiko asked the investigators to submit their findings to his office as soon as their work is completed.

SHIELD JOHO

“Please expedite,” said the letter, sent a day after Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho’s bodyguard was shot and several other people injured.

The bodyguard, Salim Manzwana, was shot in the leg as he attempted to shield Mr Joho after hell broke loose at the Migori Posta Grounds.

Mr Joho condemned the chaos in which several other leaders were injured, saying it was an assassination attempt on ODM leaders.

The chaos, according to media reports, began when Migori Governor Okoth Obado, who is not on good terms with Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, arrived at the venue.

ASSASSINATION

Mr Tobiko’s order came a day after ODM leaders accused the Jubilee government of an attempt to assassinate Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho at the rally.

Mr Mohamed, also the ODM director of elections, and MPs Millie Odhiambo (Mbita) and Peter Kaluma (Homa Bay Town), Migori governorship aspirant Ochillo Ayacko and the party’s county chairman Philip Makabong’o on Monday claimed the gunshot that hit Mr Joho’s bodyguard was aimed at the governor.

Mr Mohamed accused the government of attempting to assassinate Mr Joho and blame it on political violence in Migori.

SMASHED

“It is clear what has happened was an attempt to assassinate Governor Joho. We want to tell the Jubilee government that their threats and intimidation will not succeed,” he said.

Governor Joho, asked by reporters at an airstrip about the incident, chose to remain silent, and instead pointed at his vehicle, which had a smashed windscreen and bloodstains.

“I cannot speak over this. You can see my vehicle for evidence,” he said.

Governor Obado and local police have since denied sponsoring the violence.
