Traders rebuild shops after day of chaos

Businesses along Jogoo Road near City Stadium are slowly resuming after Nasa supporters left a wake of destruction on Friday while welcoming the return of leader Raila Odinga from the US.

However, there is tension as residents have started blaming each other for the violence that saw stalls burned.

"There are stalls that have been burned here, some that were being rebuilt have also been destroyed.

"There are different groups looking like they are blaming one another," Mr Allan Odhiambo, a Nation Media Group staff, said.

These are the after effects of the march by National Super Alliance supporters as they received Mr Odinga from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Elsewhere around Burma market, traders are rebuilding their kiosks that were set ablaze.

The traders say that on Friday they lost business worth millions.

"All the meat that was butchered yesterday in Burma market was not sold as business was brought to a standstill. Added to the things that were destroyed, we lost more than Sh20 million yesterday," Mr Peter Kimani, the chairman of the market's association, said.

Forward Sacco, the management of the minibus that was set ablaze during the chaos, denounced the criminal behaviour.

"The vehicle that was burned is worth Sh4.6 million. The owner is confused on what to do since it was the only vehicle he had.

"We condemn these acts of destroying our businesses," Mr George Mwogo, the treasurer, said.

Mr Mwogo added that the driver is hospitalised after being beaten.

RALLY
The Opposition has been holding demonstrations in various parts of the country, protesting the victory of President Uhuru Kenyatta after his re-election in a repeat poll last month.

On Friday, Mr Odinga had hoped to address his supporters at Uhuru Park upon his arrival after a 10-day visit to the US.

But police cordoned off the area and had a confrontation with the supporters.
